The History of Potato Chips
In colonial times , Potato chips were considered pig food. They not only had a large fat and salt content but they also were thought to have aphrodisiac. This chemical was proven to cause life shortening behavior. Potato chips use to be something many didn't dare to taste. But now people worldwide consume about 140 pounds of potatoes chips each year! The sectional on this deadly chemical in potato chips soon was forgotten about! But, this crispy snack didn't start out as a hit......
Potato chips were first invented by George Crum in 1851. He first invented them when he got a complaint from a customer , while working at Saratoga Springs resort, when a customer complained about his french fries being to thick. George Crum went back to the kitchen and fried up paper thin slices of potato cook to a crisp crunchy texture. These crunchy sacks soon became know as the Saratoga Chips. Although, these crisp, fried potatoes were tasty, they didn't become popular until the 1920s. However, they soon became a hit when Mrs.Scudder began mass producing the first potato chips in wax paper bags in 1926. Also Herman Lay began producing Lay's potato chips, the first successfully marketed national brand.
